Album Notes by Brownie Gold

My Dad really admires music and has been playing it all his life. My Dad also likes to make children happy. One morning he woke up and decided he wanted to make an album. Dad started taking little tunes he made up as my lullabies and turned them into children's songs. For example, he took his song “Balloons” and turned it into a fun song that my friends like. One of my friends still remembers how to sing Balloons. She just heard it one time.

Dad asked me if I wanted to be lead singer on the album. I thought it over and said yes. I have to admit; sometimes I was a pain in the rump. I got so irritable when I didn't get the words right or the pitch right and Dad could be demanding. It also didn't help that I had a stuffy nose and was missing two teeth at one point. One cool thing was that when my dad started the album, I couldn't read yet so I had to memorize the lyrics. I was only six when I sang Messy Little Girl.

Sometimes Dad recorded parts in the upstairs studio, like on the song Flower Girl. It was funny because he shouted downstairs for quiet and then he snapped out of it and started singing cheerfully. This is what he said: Hey! I'm recording in here! Ba da, da, Ba da, da. Mom and I were laughing our bottoms off the way he got back to the cheerful mood just like that after yelling at us. I guess you had to be there.

Dad gradually made progress. One by one the songs were finished off. Now I can hardly remember when we started. It was fun to meet the musicians. Each one has their own personality and they all play well. Personally, I think every musician has a different attitude. Dad plays lots of instruments on the album too. He plays: piano, saxophone, drums, flute, piccolo, violin, guitar, and keyboard.

There are a few songs we did not record. One song is called These Beans Can Sing. Maybe we'll make another album some day.

I really like music but I like dancing to it even better. I sometimes dance ballet and sometimes hip-hop. I like all kinds of dance. Occasionally, my dad will jump in and give me a twirl. Back to the story.

Each of our songs has a feeling. Here they are. Nothing Beats Being a Frog is a joyful song that makes me want to jump and hop. Something Special in This House is beautiful and about love. It makes me want a hug. Flower Girl tells a story about a girl with a nice life working in her flower shop. I like to march around in circles while I listen to Balloons. Mrs. Strange is a Halloween song that is funky and a little scary. Trinity Street is a song inspired by a street where my dad grew up. The harmony is my mom. Messy Little Girl is probably the oldest song out of the group—I mean the one we recorded first. It's funny and messy. The Man Who Steals All Your Songs is my favorite. I like the way it moves and I like the words too. Hard on You is when the kids in the On Trinity Street story forgive the man who stole all their songs. When Was the Last Time You Dreamed All the Colors is a childhood song. It gives you memories. Someday, when I'm grown up, maybe I will hear this song and remember when the album was made.

Why don't you give it a try?
